The long reach of the Web
The online version of Jason Skog's engaging story about the Iowa high school football hero tracked to Virginia Beach by a sports writer included a rare video clip of the kid's fumble recovery and 103-yard run to immortality.
The video, which Jason obtained from author Chuck Offenburger, was fascinating. But the reception it received from Hampton Roads viewers couldn't compare to that in Essex, Iowa.
Jason got this e-mail from Allen Stuart, the athletic diretor at Essex High School, the guy who filmed the game in 1987:
"We had people lined up 10 deep in the high school office to watch the video clip of the runback on the office computer Friday night at the basketball game. Dave Jauron was in the office and he and a lot of people got a big charge out of it. Then Saturday night at the St Mary's Parish Mardi Gras at Shenandoah my wife and I went with Dave and Donna Jauron and there was a lot of talk about it there. You helped to bring back lots of good memories to lots of people."
