It's a blog-eat-blog world

The AP reported a study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project Jan. 3 that readership of online journals -- "blogs" -- grew significantly in 2004, driven by increased awareness of them during the presidential campaign and other major news events such as the tsunami tragedy.

Twenty-seven percent of online adults in the United States said in November they read blogs, compared with 17 percent in a February survey.

Money quote: Blog readers are somewhat more of a mainstream group that bloggers themselves. Like bloggers, blog readers are more likely to be young, male, well-education internet veterans. Still, since our survey in February, there has been greater-than-average growh in blog readership among women, minorities, those between the ages of 30 and 49 and those with home dialup connections.

We journos ignore this dynamic new mass communiations method at our own risk.
