We had the top multimedia feature

There were so many Pilot winners in the annual Virginia Press Association competition last week, you may have missed this one.

The Pilot staff was awarded first place for "multimedia feature reporting."

The winning entry included the Flash piece in which ten Pilot photographers talked about their favorite images from the "Of Time and Tides" series published in June.

The judges wrote:

Wonderfully illustrates the region's defining characteristic -- water. The pack, print and online, uses multimedia tools to the fullest. The project is well designed and accessible on all fronts. More to the point, the photography is extraordinary and the supporting text blocks and captions help readers step through the package.

The VPA contest this year had two categories for multimedia. The Roanoke Times took home the one for multimedia news for their project called "Jordan's War."
