More future shock

Nelson Brown pointed out an Agence France-Presse report dated Nov. 10 entitled "Internet holds only future for newspapers, experts warn."

Within "six to seven years", (Guardian Newspapers) planned to dedicate 80 percent of its time to digital activities, compared to 20 percent at present, (Simon) Waldman (director of digital publishing for the group) told the conference, entitled "Beyond the Printed Word".

I was in the massive London newsrooms of Guardian Unlimited last summer. Editor-in-Chief Emily Bell introduced me to the editors of their fifteen (15!) Web portals. Even then, I had the distinct impression that those folks didn't see their online operation as an adjunct of their print product. If anything, it was the other way round.
